Take Control of Your Mind and Life Now

Success-Minded Thinking
Usually Requires Change

To achieve "success-minded" thinking there is a major challenge worth overcoming.

As children, we start out with innocence, a sense of invincibility, and the natural ability to imagine exciting possibilities. Then, as we grow and enter society we are increasingly surrounded by people bombarding us with limiting beliefs and images.

Little by little our belief that anything is possible is often whittled away. Some people are fortunate enough to slip through the deluge of the "can't - don't - no way" mentality.

However, most of us, as we grow into adulthood, find a time in our lives when we must choose between being inundated by self-defeating patterns or to take control and consciously decide to reverse the damage. -Optimally, the choice is to participate in successful ways to nourish the mind and reach for imaginative and ambitious goals.

Consider this exercise: Make a list of all the things you believed in before you were told they were impossible. Is it time to bring some of your dreams or creative ideas back to the surface? How will you attack, nourish, and pursue your imaginative possibilites now?

Are You Taking Responsibility for Success?

Accept 100% Responsibility
for Your Decisions, Actions, and Results
-
" To decide, to be at the level of choice, is to take responsibility for your life and to be in control of your life." - Abbie M. Dale

To experience a purposeful, balanced, and fulfilled life, it is imperative to accept 100% responsibility for the choices you make. This includes what you think, the beliefs you hold, the decisions you make, the actions you take, and the results you derive from those activities.

There is only one person responsible for the quality of the life you live -- that person is YOU.

"The world rewards those who take responsibility for their success."
- Curt Gerrish

When things turn sour and you blame others for your downfall, that's a dead end road. However, if you have accepted responsibility for your actions and their results, and events do not succeed as you had planned, you then have the opportunity to learn from your trials and errors. Thus, you are ahead of the game when you try again. And, you will be determined to try again -- your resolve will be even stronger.

By accepting full responsibility for your decisions, actions, and results, your approach going into any endeavor is optimized for the potential of a more positive outcome. And, when the outcome is successful, you have the privilege to reap all the well-deserved benefits.

You Must Be Proactive to Achieve!

Goals don't just materialize,
you make them happen!

Successful results occur in our personal lives and our careers when we are proactive in achieving our goals. While these goals may be a series of tiny steps or quantum leaps, they do not simply pop out of thin air. When striving to accomplish a meaningful objective, the path is much clearer and easier to pursue when it is well constructed.

The person who has taken the time to learn the process of developing and implementing inspiring and ambitious goals is the one most likely to bask in the success of reaching their objective.

Goals establish purpose and promote the mental attitude to accelerate meaningful and worthwhile objectives in our lives. They lift, motivate and expand our view of what is possible. And, equally important, authentic and concrete tangible goals, backed by commitment and plans to achieve them, keep us moving forward --- even when we are distressed or things seem insurmountable.

A well conceived goal and an enthusiastic attitude to match provide clarity for concentrating on both the mental and physical energy necessary to realize expectations. Without definitive goals, hopes, dreams, and best intentions are only randomly addressed --- which usually leads to "hit or miss" results.

When developing and implementing a goal:
  • Define exactly what is to be accomplished.
  • Understand why the goal is important.
  • Do NOT proceed with a goal which is vague and/or does not inspire action.
  • Establish both short and long term goals.
  • Prioritize multiple goals.
  • Create a clear and specific plan-of-action.
  • Establish clear criteria to measure progress.
  • Use the five senses to embed the goal.
  • Believe the goal is important and achieving it is deserved.
  • Find ways to repeatedly and frequently bring the goal to mind.
  • Ask for help.
  • Revisit the written goal periodically for possible revision.
  • Achieve the goal, celebrate, and set a new goal!

To learn more about developing and implementing your goals, contact David Schaefer.

What Are You Attracting to Your Life?

Your Choice of Thought
and Beliefs Shape Your Life
-
What you think about and believe is what you attract to your life. Clearly, thinking positively and actions of integrity beget the opportunity for more positive results. Likewise, negative, limiting or defeating thoughts beget the likelihood of negative results. Have you heard others declare that you should be careful what you wish for (say or think), as you may very well get it? There is truth in those words, and it can work for or against you.
-
The way that you interpret or explain things to yourself is critical in determining who you are as a person and the outcomes you experience. This process is under your control. It is your choice whether your thoughts are constructive and effective or detrimental.
-
Since choice of thought and beliefs largely shape the life you live, it is wise not to leave this to happenstance. You can have thoughts of self-defeating beliefs, magnified fears, and other limiting habits that will only hold you back. Or, you can be authentically positive and passionate to accomplish what is beneficial and important to you, and attract that to you --- this holds true for all facets of life.

Goals Provide Momentum Against Odds

Why Setting Goals is Imperative
Condensed from The Mind Accelerator, Technology for the Brain
Copyright by Taylor Andrew Wilson

Goals charge us with desire and work to push us outside our comfort zones, causing us to challenge ourselves and expand. They give us the momentum to advance even when things are distressing or seemingly insurmountable.

The individual with strong goals and a clear image of desire causes these elements, through repetition, to become deeply embedded with his or her subconscious mind and is therefore enabled, due to the mind's generative and sustaining power, to attain his/her goals in the least amount of time and with the least amount of physical exertion.

They (strong, clear goals) accelerate our subconscious activity, harnessing its powers of achievement, causing us to unconsciously zero in on our target 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Little by little you achieve actualization, as all your abilities and mental powers become engaged to that end.

It is shocking, but in North America today:
  • Only 5% of the population has formed goals for their future.
  • Only 1% have actually taken the effort to write their goals down.
  • Nearly 95% of the people in our society do not have clear, concise, written goals.
  • The average person spends more time planning their vacation than planning their lives.
Without goals and plans to reach them, you are like a ship without a rudder, sometimes drifting aimlessly and sometimes going full steam ahead in random directions. Those without purpose accomplish very little over a lifetime. They tend to be very busy, always moving, going, spending, doing. They confuse busyness with accomplishment --- busy people, with no goals or direction, only accomplish busyness.

Goals can only be achieved once they're conceived. If you haven't created your goals, then you're taking action in random areas of existence and completing random tasks, not accomplishing and advancing your potential.

Do You Have Postive Expectancy?

Positive Expectancy:
an absolutely crucial ingredient
to accomplishment and personal success

"Our BELIEF at the beginning of a doubtful undertaking
is the only thing that insures the successful outcome
of our venture." - William James

This week, next month, and the year ahead will unfold as you expect it will. In other words, if your outlook and belief system is positive and you genuinely expect like results, you are certainly going to realize greater personal fulfillment. This does not mean that your pursuit will always be a bed of roses just because you positively expect that outcome --- but positive expectancy begets positive results more of the time and provides the foundation for overcoming challenges along the way. Adversely, if you approach your life with the attitude that nothing will improve or that you are destined for a "Murphy's Law" (what can go wrong will go wrong) existence, that's pretty much what you can expect. It boils down to a powerful choice: positive expectancy or negative expectancy.

The person who practices the attitude and life of positive expectancy becomes proficient at turning problems into solutions, embraces responsibility as opportunity, and attacks adversity as an opporutunty for learning and strengthening abilities and resolve. The depth of your success greatly depends upon your commitment to your positive expectations.

What components contribute to Positive Expectancy?
1. Clearly decide on what it is that you desire --- be precise, write down details.
2. Use your imagination and consistently visualize the results you want.
3. Truly BELIEVE in your pursuit, no matter how many challenges are ahead.
4. Enthusiastically take action and doggedly overcome obstacles.
5. Be positive, expect the results you want.

Balance 8 Primary Areas of Your Life

More BALANCE in your life
means more SATISFACTION
Here are 8 primary areas that require your attention

There is no particular order to these 8 areas of life. It is more important with each area that you earnestly identify your present status and then clearly consider your desired level. You will begin to have greater insight as to where more balance is needed. "Balance" here refers to your particular formula for life satisfaction, not that each area equals the other. Each of us experiences growth and change, and sometimes we get stuck. So, it is important to be flexible, to periodically reassess your current picture, and then adjust your actions to achieve your desired level of satisfaction.

As you honestly assess your situation, you will increasingly realize that each of the 8 areas are interconnected and impact one another to some degree. Only you can determine the level to which you want to move forward, your timeline, and the balance that works best for you. However, keep in mind that stepping outside your comfort zone and stretching yourself can help to create greater achievement and satisfaction.

What are your answers to these 8 primary areas of your life?
1. Family -- How are your relationships with family members? How can you improve and/or provide more support for those relationships?
2. Financial -- What is your present financial picture? How can you improve your money management? Do you have a plan for your financial future?
3. Personal Growth and/or Spirituality -- Do you advance your personal development on a regular basis? If you are so inclined, do you nurture your spiritual growth?
4. Physical Environments -- How do you feel about the comfort level of your home and work surroundings? How do you manage "clutter"? What improvements do you want to make?
5. Physical Health -- Do you address the critical areas, like eating habits, exercise, sleep, weight, and hygiene? When was your last physical exam? What improvements do you want to make?
6. Recreational and Creativity -- Do you take time for personal leisure? Do you relax and have fun? Do you have creative outlets in your life? How would you improve the quality of these areas?
7. Social and Relational -- Have you nurtured friendships that bring you enjoyment and support? Do you have a more personal intimate relationship? What improvements would you make?
8. Vocational -- How does your present vocation compare to your desired career? Are you advancing in your work environment? What changes would bring you more satisfaction professionally, personally, and financially?

You May Be A Procrastinator

PROCRASTINATION ...
Is it interfering with your life, work, or both?

If you answer YES to 2 or more of these questions, you may be a procrastinator:

Do you often put necessary work aside to do more enjoyable things?
Do you duck new experiences because change is difficult?
Do you frequently evade decisions?
Do you feel overwhelmed, not knowing where to begin?
Do you carefully map out projects but rarely see them through?
Do you feel ill when you're confronted with an undesirable task?
Do you fault others when things don't go as you planned?
Do you remain in a job when you're unhappy for fear of making a move?
Do you avoid confrontation at any cost?

While procrastination may seem like a simple behavior, it can be complex. It involves emotions, skills, attitudes, health, and factors that often operate below your radar.

Focus On What You Want -- Visualize

Develop the Art of Visualization

"The world is a looking glass. It gives back to every man
a true reflection of his own thoughts."
- Thackery, English novelist

Once you begin to practice the art of truly visualizing the successful attainment of your goals, you will begin to understand the positive impact of this process. Begin by giving free-rein to your imagination. As best you can, set aside your inhibitions as you infuse your creativity. In time, you will become skilled at visualizing the achievement of your desired outcome.

Each day and/or evening set aside dedicated time to picture, fantasize, and visualize your goals as if they had already been accomplished. This step is very important --- be consistent in this practice. Try to see things as you want them to be, instead of as they are. Close your eyes and project clear mental pictures. Visualize your appearance and actions just as they would be if your goals had already been attained.

For example, you may want to imagine yourself sitting in a theater; and while looking at the movie screen, see yourself successfully accomplishing your desires. Focus your attention on the details of your accomplished results. When you repeatedly form a clear picture of your future, you will soon find ways and means to bring it into reality.

At first, don't be concerned about how you are going to do it, just focus on what you want to do. Your inspiration for how you will achieve your goal and the self-motivation for forging ahead will surface naturally. Your vivid imagination will lead to desire, and that will lead to action and belief --- and ultimately creating circumstances and opportunities which you may seize to produce the results you want.

Do you know that every cell in your body
is affected by every thought you have
... every word you say to yourself?

Ask yourself these revealing questions:

  • Do you mentally berate yourself when you make a mistake?
  • Do you accept what you say when it is negative?
  • Do you really know when your outlook needs a tune up?
  • Do you skip the solution when you suspect a problem?
  • Do you identify why an idea can't work before you recognize why it can?
  • Do you struggle through projects when others breeze through them?
  • Do you disparage or discredit your feelings?
  • Do you attempt positive, action-oriented goals, yet they evaporate?
  • Do you know how to effectively implement positive, lasting change?

Whether or not the Self-Talk you engage in is good or bad, it affects what you believe, the attitudes and feelings you hold, the actions you take, and the results you produce. A positive pattern of Self-Talk is one of the strongest, most effective components of personal growth and self-management. When well considered, it will move you in the direction that serves you best.

A Snapshot for S.M.A.R.T. Goals
. . . Implement a clear and organized goal setting process
-

S = Specific. The more specific your goal, the better. General or vague goals really don't work. Always nail down who, what, where, when, which, and why. Write down, verbalize, and concentrate on your goals.

M = Measurable. Set clear criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of your goals. This is how you can determine your progress and when you have arrived.

A = Attainable. Set goals that you can reach when you set your mind to it. With each subsequent goal, stretch yourself even further to reach greater achievements. And, with each success you will believe in bigger accomplishments.

R= Realistic. If you truly believe that you can accomplish a goal, then it is most likely realistic. The goal must represent an objective that you are both willing and able to work toward. Although realistic, aim high and stretch.

T = Tangible. Think taste, touch, smell, sight, and sound. When your senses are used, the goal becomes real to the subconscious mind. Attach tangible ways to reach your intangible goals (personal and behavioral changes).

Did you know that there is an
"Attention Center" in the brain?

Find out about RAS and why goal setting works
Contributed by Jim Henion

Email David@CoachingConfidential.com to learn more

Why does the simple process of writing out goals and visualizing their accomplishment work? Although there are many theories about this, one is related to what is called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). It is an integral part of every persons brain and motivation process.

The RAS is the attention center in the brain. It is the key to "turning on the subconscious capabilities of the creative mind." Many believe it to be the center of motivation. This system determines what we pay attention to. In other words, it is the part of the brain where the world "outside" of you and your "inside" world of thoughts and feelings come together and meet.

Goal setting is the process of telling your RAS what is important to you, so that it lets in information that is important to the achievement of a particular goal.
