A Success Mindset Is Required

A Mindset for Success
Produces Remarkable Results

Discover These 9 Contributing Factors

The ability of the human mind can serve us beyond our wildest imaginations. It has an unlimited capacity to learn; and when properly nurtured, it promotes clarity of thought, achievement, and even longevity of life. Taking responsibility for the successful activity of your mind and deliberately stimulating it for productive output can reap tremendous rewards.

It is easy for us to project our mental activities toward external matters instead of looking within ourselves and intelligently utilizing the natural gifts of the brain. But, introspection is precisely where success begins and effective action gets processed.

When you understand that the mind is where imagination, inspiration, belief, change, and self-discipline must take place, and you begin to infuse powerful insights and techniques to structure the process, the potential results can be remarkable.

Taking control of your mental faculties and nurturing them to their best advantage provides significant inroads toward accomplishing your important goals. For example, you learn how to overcome doubt, mental clutter, tolerations, resistance, and other self-limiting obstacles which can undermine, distract, and sabotage your personal growth and actions for the success you envision.

To help you find greater clarity toward achieving what matters most to you, carefully consider how you can begin to implement some or all of the following 9 key action steps for a successful mindset. Once you realize the potential impact these points can have in your life, you will certainly want to make them a part of your everyday action plan for success.

1. Understand that happiness and success originate from within you. It is the world inside you that creates the conditions of your life. To positively change and grow you must truly realize that success or failure is a reflection of your inner world. Put another way, what you reveal outwardly depends on your inner thoughts and beliefs and how you decide to process and act on those elements. Once this is understood and actively addressed, inward and outward success can nurture one another and contribute to personal happiness and the life you desire.

2. The mind holds a tremendous desire to be positively stimulated and to experience the feeling of success. This part of you that feels, perceives, and reasons thirsts for your input and follow-through to achieve. In other words, your brain is designed to solve problems and to help you reach the goals that you give it. Think of your mind as a clean slate, where you have the opportunity to nourish and empower it with only the healthiest thoughts, beliefs, and intentions. The thoughts you choose to contribute toward your desired outcome gage the results you derive.

3. Choice of thought and beliefs shape your life. What you think about and believe is what you attract to your life. Clearly, thinking positively and actions of integrity beget the opportunity for more positive results. Likewise, negative, limiting or defeating thoughts beget the likelihood of negative results. Have you heard others declare that you should be careful what you wish for (say or think) as you may very well get it? There is truth in those words, and it can work for or against you. The way that you interpret or explain things to yourself is critical in determining who you are as person and the outcomes you experience.

4. Decisions, actions, and results are your responsibility. To experience a purposeful, balanced, and fulfilled life, it is imperative to accept 100 percent responsibility for the choices you make. This includes what you think, the beliefs you hold, the decisions you make, the actions you take, and the results you derive from those activities. There is only one person responsible for the quality of life you live. That person is you. By accepting full responsibility for your decisions, actions, and results, your approach going into any endeavor is optimized for the potential of a more positive outcome.

5. The mind concentrates on a single thought at any given time – use it wisely. If you accept that the mind holds a single thought at any given time, it would then seem advantageous that each thought should be truly constructive and contribute to your life. Perhaps that would not be realistic 100 percent of the time, but working toward a more effective choice of thought is certainly a better alternative than living with self-limiting or disempowering thoughts.Learn to swiftly replace negative thoughts with positive, productive, or inspiring ones. It takes practice to do this consistently. But, you will find as you develop this insight and habit of capturing worthwhile, energizing thoughts, negative thoughts will be inhibited and eventually lose their power.

6. Know that your thought patterns are habits, and some habits need to be changed. Like most habits, you can change your patterns of thought. This includes what you think about and the best use of your mental energy. Often, we succumb to thinking patterns which do not offer much value. It is easy to become stuck with the same thoughts and beliefs, speaking the same words, and repeatedly doing the same things. Such a pattern can stifle creativity, learning, and opportunities for a more interesting and adventurous life. Learn to identify your patterns of thought and recognize where, or if, change is needed. But, you must be diligent when making changes, as familiar patterns (habits) which are not serving you well are deeply entrenched and new thinking patterns take time to establish.

7. Self-image must be nurtured. Each of us has our own native abilities, signature strengths, learning styles, and personality traits. As you move through your daily life, your self-image can support or sabotage your efforts. It can mean the difference between feeling inspired and taking action or being apathetic and remaining stagnate. An immediate way to begin addressing this issue is to take note of the mental pictures you hold of yourself. Are those images in alignment with what you actually desire for your life? If they are, that is outstanding. Continue to nurture and support yourself. If, however, after an honest self-appraisal, you feel a change is required to match the self-image you want, then figure out what change is necessary and make a commitment to accomplish it.

8. Goals require belief, commitment, and persistence. After determining what you want, with the end result in mind, establish both short and long term goals which are worthwhile, achievable, crystal clear, and measurable. Know why these goals are important to you and what inspires you to achieve them. Then courageously commit to your goals with specific time frames. Do not let fear, false starts, adversity, or other people derail your pursuit. Believing in the outcome determines the outcome. Know that you deserve what you want and that you will achieve your goal. Hold fast to your vision and maintain your focus.

9. The subconscious mind is central to your success. To truly effect worthwhile and long-term change toward achieving what matters most to you, your affirmative thoughts must reach the subconscious mind. It is said that as much as 90 percent of ones behavior and beliefs are the result of what the subconscious mind accepts. And, it has been shown that if you earnestly practice the exercise of feeding your mind with well-chosen information for at least 20 to 30 consecutive days you will have an excellent chance of impacting the subconscious mind for positive change. Rather than letting your environment control your life, you will be astonished at how your subconscious mind can energize and support you when you learn to consult it and nurture it with the information that serves you best.

Recapture Your Dreams

Have Your Dreams Diminished Over Time?
..
Have you ever wondered why your once exciting dreams have somehow lost their luster? Perhaps you haven't positively attended to your plans, or maybe it goes a little deeper and getting off track has evolved over time.
.To embrace and achieve the mindset that leads to the success you truly desire, a shift in thinking may be necessary. Often, after years of trying to get ahead and following the directives of other people, we lose site of our own aspirations. Getting back to your dreams and nurturing their growth can sometimes be a challenge. But it is a challenge worth taking on.
.
As children we start out with innocence, a sense of invincibility, and the natural ability to imagine exciting possibilities. Then, as we grow and enter society we are increasingly surrounded by people bombarding us with limiting beliefs and diminished images.
.Little by little our belief that anything is possible is often whittled away and we seem to accept a diluted version of what we had hoped to achieve. Some people are fortunate enough to slip through the deluge of the 'can't - don't - no way' mentality.
.
However, most of us, as we grow into adulthood, find a time in our lives when we must choose between being inundated by self-defeating patterns or to take control and consciously decide to reverse the damage. Optimally, the choice is to participate in successful ways to nourish the mind and reach for imaginative and ambitious goals. This is called Success-Minded Thinking and it takes practice to get the mindset where you want it.
.Consider this exercise: Begin by making a list of all the things you believed in before you were told they were impossible. Do this without any editing. For now, just get your imaginative thoughts noted. Keep adding to your list, and new ideas are okay too. Bring your dreams and creative ideas back to the surface You may want to take several weeks to let your thinking percolate.
.When you feel that you have captured a healthy list of possibilities, then begin to view them with an open mind. Warning: with all the old tapes of what you should and shouldn't do playing in the back of your mind, you may need to really work on that 'open mind' concept. Keep in mind that this is your life and your future that you are addressing. So, allow yourself to consider how your recaptured dreams and new ideas can possibly be engaged in your life.
.
After identifying what you want to act on, begin to establish clear goals and action plans for achieving your desired results. You must make a conscious choice to participate in successful ways to nourish your mind and act on imaginative and ambitious goals. Engage in Success-Minded Thinking to pursue the dreams you want to fulfill in your life.

Fear Is An Insidious Virus

Do Not Fumble
with Fear!

...
.
"Fear is an insidious virus. Given a breeding place in our minds it will eat away our spirit and block the forward path of our endeavors."
- James F. Bell

An awareness of fear can actually be of benefit, as it cautions us of potential harm. But, to be consumed by fear and to allow it to negatively impact your hopes, dreams and goals is very detrimental.

It is imperative that you learn to direct your thoughts and choices where they will do the most good toward your desired outcome. That means not allowing fear to creep in, take over and create a deluge of doubt and ongoing uncertainty.

If allowed to fester, unnecessary fear and worry can suck the life out of you. It can dramatically, and often silently, invade all areas of your life --- robbing you of physical, emotional and social productivity.

How do you counter the type of fear, worry and insecurity that is not really an immediate threat? You must learn to channel your thinking toward what is most important to you. In other words, take control of your thoughts and actions.

Remind yourself of the reason for your goal and why it will be of value when it is accomplished. Re-examine the steps you want to take in order to achieve your goal. And then take immediate action and begin moving forward. If you truly immerse yourself in going for your goal, the fear that was plaguing you will begin to evaporate.

Bottom line: do whatever it takes to see past your fear and take positive action toward the goal that is most important to you. Take control and change your focus from the fear to what you want and can do. If you feel that you need help to move forward, get it.

We all experience thoughts that can undermine and derail our mood, intentions, and actions. It is how we decide to respond to those thoughts that make the difference.

Is Your Mind Arranged for Happiness?

"Happiness Is Something
You Decide On Ahead of Time"
..
So often people allow others to determine their outlook, or circumstances to dictate their perception of life. We make choices throughout each day of our lives and those choices can be our own or we can turn that power over to other elements, including the weather.
.
If you stop to think about the decisions you make and how they impact your happiness, wouldn't it be best to own those choices and act upon your life with actions that bring you happiness -- rather than chaos, indecision, or negative thinking?
.
When you throw a pebble in a pond you see a ripple effect moving outward. That is precisely what occurs in your life whether you decide to be happy or unhappy. It is a choice, and it should be a conscious choice. When the ripple effect is filled with a postive outlook and good intentions, the impact can be enormously empowering for you as well as those around you. The alternative usually limits possibilities and puts a real damper on ones outlook of life. Which choice would you prefer?

Stuck? Maybe It's Time To Reboot!

"Everyone Needs a Break Now And Then"
.
We all experience times when the task, the moment, or the day just isn't working for us. Perhaps you didn't get enough sleep, or you haven't been eating right, maybe you've been laboring with some troublesome issue, or the body simply is not cooperating.
.
With caffeine, nicotine, or other mind-body boosting agents aside, maybe you simply need to push away from whatever it is that's plaguing you and take a break. It is amazing what a change of scenery or a complete change in thinking can do to nourish and revitalize your mindset.
.
Think for a moment how you can be almost instantaneously transformed when you hear something that strikes you as really funny or you're pulled out of your own thoughts to someone else's experience. A change of thought or place can literally alter that feeling of being stuck.
.
For the person who simply doesn't feel productive or of value if not constantly focusing on a worthwhile task, "pushing away" for awhile can be a real challenge. In fact, the feeling of guilt and wasting precious time undermines the very idea of "taking a break." But, do it anyway!
.
If at first you feel uncomfortable stepping outside your present need to forge ahead (even though you're probably not at the top of your game), do it anyway! This is why we repeatedly hear about people coming back from even a short vacation feeling refreshed and ready to attack their goals with a new outlook.
.
Once you get into the habit of finding out what works for you to "reboot" your mindset, the action will get easier and more effective. Maybe it's a walk around the block, a 30-minute video or DVD that always makes you feel good, or calling someone special. It just takes a little imagination. But, you will discover that when you return to that brick wall you were fighting against, things will definitely look different.

We all need to "reboot" sometimes! It is amazing what a change of scenery or a complete change in thinking can do to nourish and revitalize the mindset. Learn how to do this effectively and you will be at the top of your game more often than you can imagine.

People Always Pass Failure On The Way to Success

"All Successful People Do This"

There is a perspective that one needs to keep in mind when things don't go as planned. That is, people always pass failure on the way to success. The key element of failing is to learn from the experience, reevaluate, and move forward --- all successful people do this.
-

"Success is the ability to go from one failure to another
with no loss of enthusiasm."

- Winston Churchill

-
Failure is a significant part of the learning process. It is important to accept that we learn by trial and error. Think of the process like this: get started > make mistakes > listen to the feedback > tweak what needs to corrected > and keep moving forward toward the goal.
-
When you "fail" to achieve what you had in mind, you are of no less value. You have actually increased your value by the knowledge you have gained --- if you are willing to make mistakes and learn from the experience.

Perhaps you have discovered a route to avoid, or a new path has surfaced, or new sources of help have appeared. When people succeed in acquiring their goals, it is because they persist toward the desired end result in spite of the obstacles that pop up (and it is very rare when unexpected challenges don't occur).
-
Fear of failing does not have to be a part of your mindset. That is, if you change your perspective and know that the path toward your goal will most likely have challenges --- all worthwhile goals require tenacity.
-
Remember, all successful people learn from experience and move forward!

You Must Nurture Success-Minded Thinking

"You Become What You Think About
Most Of The Time."
-
In order to accomplish a successful result, you must begin with a mindset that sufficiently prepares you to implement the actions necessary for a positive outcome. In other words, simply jumping into an action without first properly preparing your thoughts for the process is like showing up for a job interview without an appointment or any worthwhile forethought. If that's not self-sabotage, what is?
-
To achieve actions that consistently support the outcomes you desire, take the time to invest in "success-minded thinking." That involves a vision of your desired end result, a plan for the actions that truly favor your success, and believing that the outcome you want is what will occur.
-
There is a workable philosophy at the core of success-minded thinking. That is, you become what you think about most of the time. If you constantly think about the possibility of failure, that's most likely going to be your outcome. However, if you consciously make the effort to think in positive terms, where you visualize your successful accomplishment --- and when negative thoughts arise, immediately replace them with constructive thoughts --- then you are definitely on the right track.
-
Should you decide to take this advice to heart, then realize that you will experience increased success every single time you consciously focus on your more favorable thinking patterns and implement planned actions for your desired outcome. Like any worthwhile endeavor, practice will make the process easier and increasingly more achievable.

-
Success-minded thinking can initially be challenging for many people. Particularly when you consider that expecting the possibility of failure has been the norm for years. But, once you truly understand that "you become what you think about most of the time," your perspective takes on an entirely new and fresh outlook toward achieving success.

Grow and Nourish from New Opportunities

Release the OLD, Allow the NEW
"Learn to Let Go and Gain a New Perspective"
-
If you seem to be stuck, unable to gain momentum -- to advance toward what you really want to achieve -- you may be dragging around OLD negative images and disappointments. Except for learning from those experiences, it is important to let go and allow NEW opportunities a chance to grow and nourish.
-
Past negative images that are festered and constantly revisited can markedly stall attempts to begin fresh and and move forward. Both negative and positive self-images are very powerful, and attempting to live with both simultaneously is a clash of brain power that simply doesn't work -- essentially, one cancels out the other.
-
Unless you decide to take control, negative images have a way of continually bombarding your thoughts toward a downward spiral. Such thoughts just seem to feed on themselves, resulting in behavior that only supports being stuck in your tracks.
-
A conscious choice to release negative thoughts and images must be made in order to allow for new and positive experiences to occur. This gives you the power to let go of limiting beliefs and to change your entire perspective. It usually requires you to step outside your comfort zone -- but that is where most success really takes hold.

Motivation = Preparation and Focus

"Get Motivated, Stay Motivated"

Create The Right Mindset
and Keep Destructive Thinking At Bay

How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated is a challenge everyone struggles with at one time or another. The difference between consistently successful people and those who frequently feel stuck is understanding that productive action and results depend on preparation and focus -- and 99% of that preparation is in the mindset. In other words, to experience positive action, one must first experience positive thoughts (preferably to the point of actually visualizing a successful outcome -- as if it is already attained).
-
Self-Motivation naturally exists when there is a contrast between what is presently happening in one's life and what one definitely wants to happen, and they are determined to experience the desired result. However, without proper preparation to doggedly move forward, ruinous negative self-talk creeps in and stalling out tends to occur.
-
The problem is that most people don't prepare a crystal clear vision of what they want to accomplish or how they are going to achieve it. To truly go after a meaningful goal and be motivated, one must set a plan into place that includes practical sequential steps as well as a mindset that supports a positive result.
-
Let's shift fast-forward to the mindset: To help reduce or eliminate nagging struggle in establishing motivation and keeping self-motivated, it is important to understand that the subconscious mind is infinitely more powerful than the conscious mind. The subconscious mind does not know the difference between a truth and a lie. ==> Digest that thought for a moment, because it is at the heart of achieving the necessary mindset to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated. The repetitive information fed to this powerful part of the mind is what it is going to believe!
-
If one constantly degrades their actions or self-worth, that is exactly what the subconscious mind will believe -- and it will strongly reinforce that belief. Knowing the impact this part of the mind plays, the better choice is to carefully deliver constructive, postive thoughts. When negative or destructive thinking surfaces, stop it dead in its tracks and immediately replace it with supportive, positive self-talk. Feed the subconscious mind exactly the thoughts and vision desired -- preferably, as if it is presently happening. "I am a successful entrepreneur" is better than "I want to be ..."
-
Motivation and sustained self-motivation is based in the understanding of just how influential the proper mindset is to successful outcomes. And, there is often an unexpected bonus. With the right mindset and commitment, people and other valuable resources will naturally gravitate to support one's efforts.

Are Your Intentions and Actions Aligned?

Overcome Self-Sabotage

"Are You Sabotaging Your Intended Efforts For Success?"

Successful living, whether personally, in work or in love, ultimately stems from our inner perceptions and the congruence of our actions. If what we want and how we go about accomplishing our goals is INcongruent, then we are likely to experience self-sabotage.

In order for success to be achieved, ones intentions and actions must be in alignment.

Take a moment to see if your desired results are actually being processed effectively, or if you are tripping yourself up along the way.

Ask yourself:
  • Do I truly WANT what I think I want?
  • Do I earnestly BELIEVE that I can achieve my goal?
  • Do I deeply feel that I DESERVE to have what I want?
If you experience nagging doubt about the answer to one or more of the above questions when you've decided to pursue a goal, then you may be a candidate for self-sabotage. So, the question is: how do you overcome the doubts that may cause your intentions to stall out?

Explore your real intentions. Why are you acting on this particular goal? Is it actually your goal or someone else's? Is the goal 100% what you want? Taking the time to consider this fundamental step is very important and can mean the difference between success and disappointment.

Explore your level of belief. In addition to wanting the goal, do you truly believe the goal is achievable? Do you believe down deep this is important enough to you to go after it? Have you thought about the tools and resources you will need for positive action? Can you commit yourself to what is necessary to accomplish the results you want?

Explore your feelings about deserving the outcome. While this may seem strange, if you do not completely feel that you are worthy of a successful outcome, all the time and energy invested simply will not bring the goal to fruition. This type of self-sabotage will definitely result in perplexing disappointment. If you definitely want the goal and believe in it, but have any doubt whether you are worthy of it's success --- figure out why you feel this way. Most likely, when honestly addressed, you can resolve this issue and move forward

It is absolutely wonderful when your intentions and actions are in alignment, and you know that you want a goal, believe in it, and deserve it. But, unless you consciously deal with these basic elements, then it is possible to sabotage your well-intended efforts.

Well-Constructed Affirmations Accelerate Success

Repeated Affirmations Support Action

... imagine a personal advocate whispering positive support ---
even when you're not aware of it.

Once you become clear about a goal you want to accomplish and consistently keep focused on it, how to achieve it will keep surfacing. One effective method to implement and support the process is through the use of affirmations.
-
An affirmation is a statement that describes a goal in its already completed state. The purpose of the affirmation is to repeatedly tap into the subconscious mind for eventual positive and sustained change to achieve one's goal. Examples of an affirmation are: "I am confident and proud after receiving my promotion in only 5 months or better," or "I am celebrating the completion my 4-year degree in only 3 years," or "I am feeling the sun and wind on my face while riding my new silver Harley," or "I am enthusiastically and effectively communicating with an audience of 100 people or more."
-
Some key components of a well-stated affirmation include:
-
Make affirmations only for yourself --- this is only about you and your completed desire.
-
Begin with "I am" --- the subconscious mind interprets these words as a directive to make the statement happen.
-
State the affirmation postively and in the present tense --- omit any negative reference such as "no" or "don't," and describe as already achieved.
-
Be specific and brief --- nonspecific words produce vague results, and edit so each word is important and easy to remember.
-
Incorporate an "ing" action word(s) --- it emphasizes active power and a vision of accomplishment.
-
Include a word(s) expressing emotion or feeling --- emotionally, how would you be feeling when the goal was achieved?
-
Add "something better," ". . . better" or "more" --- often including such words will expand the potential for greater possibilities (beyond your original consideration)
-
When you visualize the completion of a goal and repeatedly affirm the end result (silently, aloud and written), your subconscious mind will soon automatically do this for you (like someone supportively whispering in your ear). The results of the well-constructed affirmation process can be absolutely amazing. It is a fairly simple and effective way to help achieve one's goals. Yet, very few people consistently implement the use of affirmations, so those who do really have a competitive edge!

Visualization: Think Search, Find, and Support

VISUALIZATION: Accelerate the brain to achieve more for YOU

-

When one learns to employ the proven process of visualization, desired goals can be within reach much sooner than one might first expect. It activates the subconscious mind to find solutions and boosts new levels of motivation.

When creating compelling and vivid pictures in the mind, the subconscious will search and capture the information needed to bring the image increasingly closer to reality. This process stimulates the brain to become aware of anything that will help accompllish the goal that is pictured (see reticular activating system -RAS- Blog post February, 2006). Think search, find, and support.

The effective implementation of visualization is probably the most UNDER-utilized success tool that we possess. Unfortunately, most people simply do not take advantage of this powerful technique to achieve their goals. But that can be reversed quickly if one will seriously consider the benefits to be derived from well-formed goals being vividly pictured in the mind.

In a Harvard study, researchers discovered that students who visualized in advance performed tasks with nearly 100% accuracy, compared to those who did not visualize and achieved only 55% accuracy. It is pretty common knowledge that best performing athletes use the art of visualization to mentally practice their success before competing --- with outstanding results.

The individual who learns to properly set goals (click on Goals below) and then proceeds to also use the process of consistantly visualizing their successful completion will always have the competitive edge and be ahead of the pack. - Learn to write down well-constructed goals, review and affirm them, and visualize them every day.

For help in setting, implementing, and visualizing goals for successful achievement, study the Previous Posts and Archives of this Blog or visit the Coaching Confidential website. Better yet, begin the productive process of one-on-one personal coaching.

Discover What Not To Do To Achieve Your Goals

What a wonderful opportunity this gives me to start fresh
- Thomas A. Edison

-
Attitude is the key to getting through tough times and achieving eventual success. Certainly, no one knew this better than Thomas Edison in his pursuit to find the substance that would function effectively as a filament for his electric light. He tried nearly 10,000 times before he discovered the answer. And, to his credit, his outlook was that he was fortunate enough to find 10,000 ways that didn't work --- bringing him that much closer to a successful outcome. He definitely had the right attitude when it came to turning moments of "failure" into times of learning and advancing.
-
Unfortunately though, after Mr. Edison's discovery of the answer to his research, his Menlo Park laboratory went up in flames --- destroying all his records and work in progress. This man of vision and dedication to his dreams refused to see the setback as tragedy or failure. His response was, "What a wonderful opportunity this gives me to start fresh."
-
The lesson learned from this famous inventor was that no matter what the challenge or adversity, no matter whether we have little or no control over the circumstances thrust upon us, how we RESPOND to such experiences determines if our success is achievable. Obstacles are simply a part of the journey toward attaining a worthwhile goal, and how we overcome these challenges reveals our true determination and character.

Do You Believe That You Are Capable?

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal. -- Thomas Jefferson
-

To achieve the success you envision, you must believe that you are capable of making it happen. For some people, this deep-seated belief comes quite naturally. However, for many of us we question our ability to ultimately succeed at accomplishing our dreams. Often, it is because we have allowed ourselves to absorb repeated negative comments over the years, or perhaps we didn't receive a sufficent dose of positive reinforcement in our youth. There are a variety possible reasons as to why we question that we can't or won't follow through with a desired objective.

If you are one who needs to regroup and begin the process of taking back control of your outlook toward positive outcomes, the good news is that it is entirely possible. The bad news is that successful achievements simply won't happen unless you believe they are possible and make the commitment to passionately pursue your goals.

It may take awhile to condition yourself to develop a pattern of authentic positive expectancy, but it is most likely easier than you imagine. Once you accept that the brain reponds to what it is conditioned to expect, then the process begins to make sense. For example, if one is conditioned to expect failure, one can also be conditioned to expect successful results.

Thomas Jefferson was right on target when he stated that "Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal." Over time, he conditioned his mind to expect positive outcomes. Mr. Jefferson developed an attitude of thought that attracted positive results, people, and circumstances that supported the fulfillment of his goals. He nurtured self-belief and self-confidence. Developing "the right mental attitude" for successful outcomes is possible for each of us.

If the concept of truly believing that you are capable of achieving a major goal is a bit overwhelming, then begin with a smaller, more manageable objective and progress to a larger goal. Remember, each of us had to crawl before we could walk. Allow yourself the opportunity to develop a pattern of positive expectancy. With time, your mind will be conditioned to support you as if you have the wind at your back.

Are Others Trying to Sabotage You?

Beware of the Dream-dashers!

There are people, usually due to their own insecurities, who will directly or indirectly attempt to DASH (sabotage) your dreams. They are the dream-dashers. If you truly believe in something you want to accomplish (whether for yourself or to aid others), do NOT let the dream-dasher in. They will diminish your vision and squelch your excitement before you realize what is happening.
-
Sometimes the dream-dasher is disguised as one offering to play "the devil's advocate" (an appropriate moniker), and other times this person will literally try to talk you out of your vision.
-
If you have realistically weighed the value of your pursuit and believe whole-heartedly in your dream, then carefully determine with whom and how you will communicate your vision.
-
It is wonderful when you can share exciting news about an idea you have developed. In fact, it is a conscious and subconscious move forward when you can share your vision. The experience of sharing your dream with someone who is positive and supportive will actally strengthen your belief that you can achieve it. Such a trusted individual can often help you expand your vision with even more possibilities.
-
When you believe in your vision and you want to see it grow and prosper, engage the people who you know will be nurturing and supportively honest. While they relish your enthusiasm, they will also reveal additional ideas to help crystallize your thinking. This is very different than approaching the person who seems to find strange pleasure in dashing other people's ideas, dreams, and goals.
-
Believe in the genius that gave birth to your idea, be cautious as to whom you entrust your precious imagination, and then enthusiastically pursue your dream with insight and planning.

Are You Optimistic or Pessimistic?

Our thoughts, expectations, and beliefs
influence behavior
-
Optimistic or Pessimistic?
-
How have your experiences shaped your perceptions and behavior? Do your thoughts, expectations, and beliefs serve you well and help you to attain what you want in your life?
-
If you have conditioned yourself over the years to embrace thoughts and actions that are pessimistic in nature, that deter you from achieving what you truly desire, you are not alone. As we move through life, from childhood into adulthood, we absorb beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors from others and circumstances that may or may not serve us well.
-
Perhaps you have recognized certain beliefs and behaviors that you hold and wish you could see things differently. This leads us to ask, "Is it possible to change habitual but unproductive ways of thinking and make those changes last?" And, "Can we choose to be different and then actually do it, even after many years of conditioning?" The answer is YES!
-
In studies established by Dr. Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania, he discovered two very important findings. First, pessimistic, or helpless, attitudes are not inherited, inborn traits. They are learned and gradually acquired. Second, because they are learned, they can also be unlearned --- and new and more desirable beliefs and behaviors can be established.
-
Dr. Seligman found that optimists tend to live more successful lives and sometimes live longer as well. They enjoy higher levels of achievement, better health, and have less trouble with depression. People with optimistic thought patterns cope better with setbacks, obstacles, and failure. Most importantly, optimism can be learned and taught.
-
When a belief is changed, so does the associated behavior. And a changed behavior leads to different results. Because thoughts, expectations, and beliefs do influence behavior, it is well worth taking the time and effort to focus on any changes you want to address. It is critical to keep in mind that you have the power to retain, modify, or discard the thoughts and beliefs that you possess.

List Your Reasons-To-Believe (RTB)

Reasons to Believe (RTB)
-
To achieve anything you must believe in your pursuit.

If you really want to accomplish a goal, to have something that you want to become a reality, then clearly establish your reasons to believe why this is what you want.

Do this exercise: Make a list of all your Reasons to Believe (RTBs) --- that is, the meaningful reasons why your desire should and will happen. Initially, just jot down all your ideas without regard to tiny details or sentence structure, simply get the thrust of your thinking down on paper. Sometimes this excercise can be done very quickly and other times it may be best to allow your thoughts to evolve over time. This process depends on the subject matter and whether this is a new brainstorm or a dream that has been percolating for some time.

When you feel that you have established your RTBs for pursuing your desired goal, you will have truly begun the foundation for your commitment to achieve your dream. You will realize, "Aha!, so this is why the goal is so important to me."

The next step is to crystallize how you are going to accomplish your pursuit. When setting out to create a plan of action, that's when you can begin refining the step-by-step approach toward achieving your goal. Keep your RTBs clearly in mind, do not get bogged down. Your enthusiasm is paramount, keep moving forward.

For sequential steps in pursuing a goal refer to the November 25, 2006 blog posting (see the "Archives" listing to the right). The main point of this posting is for you to understand the importance of clearly establishing your Reasons to Believe why you want your desired outcome. Once you decide on a goal, be absolutely sure that you know your RTBs --- and always make sure those reasons are your own.

For assistance in structuring your goals, establishing a plan of action, and realizing your dreams, take advantage of the resources found at Coaching Confidenital.

Different Results Require New Thinking

Stop! Wake Up.
-
Different results
require new thinking.
-
You cannot expect new or different results if you keep the same old habits of thinking.
-

New and more successful outcomes begin with your choice of thought. Like most habits, you can change your thinking patterns. This includes what you think about and the best use of your mental energy. Often, we succumb to thinking patterns which don't really serve us much value.

It is easy to become stuck with the same thoughts and beliefs, speaking the same words, and doing the same things over and over. It's like an endless loop -- and such a pattern can stifle creativity, learning, and opportunities for a more interesting and adventurous life.

You can learn to identify your own habits of thought and recognize where, or if, change is needed. But, you must be diligent when making changes, as familiar patterns which are not serving you well are deeply entrenched and new thinking patterns take time to establish. You cannot expect new or different results if you keep the same old habits of thinking!

Perhaps you are in a pattern of over analyzing, maybe to the point of procrastination. Or maybe you have fallen into the habit of thinking in negative terms, rather than positive alternatives. Because you become what you think about most of the time, it is important to consciously change less productive thinking to habits that clearly contribute to attaining your most desired way of living.
